Nightcap OTS

OTS is short for “Over The Shoulder” graphic. OTS’s serve to create a sort of visual headline to a story. Sometimes OTS’s are story specific, but other times they are created so they may be used in a variety of stories with the same theme. As with all graphics created for newscasts, they are generally created in a very short space of time since they are assigned shortly before air-time.

One of the first graphics Christian reworked upon taking over the duties of the former art director was the Nightcap OTS. The Nightcap OTS is a graphic that is used at the end of nearly every 10:00 PM newscast that introduces a fairly lighthearted story. The original graphic was horrendous, and since it was used nearly every day, it needed to be changed. Christian created a 50’s style cartoon image that fit with the format of the Nightcap segment perfectly. In a medium where graphics are disposable, the Nightcap OTS has been, by far, Christian’s most enduring creation, remaining in use over six years thus far.
