Blackbird Postcard

Several years ago, Christian’s friends wanted to start a sort of artist collective to produce creative work. To get started, it was decided that the collective would self-publish a series of postcards, each visually representing a stanza from Wallace Stevens’ poem, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. Christian chose the third stanza, which reads:

I was of three minds,
Like a tree
In which there are three blackbirds.

Christian used a simple graphic style in his interpretation. The cool and stark colors combined with harsh shapes were meant to evoke the cold described in the poem. Several techniques, such as implementing three different typefaces, using only 3 colors, and repeating graphic shapes, were used to reinforce the motif of threes.
