Ain't Misbehavin' Invitation

Children’s Respite Care Center provides care to medically fragile, developmentally delayed, physically challenged and behaviorally disordered children through comprehensive day services, behavioral health and overnight weekend respite programs. This remarkable organization depends largely on donations to provide their services to the Omaha community. One of their biggest fundraising events is an annual musical review. In 2009, the musical review was Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Fats Waller Musical Show, and Christian was given the opportunity to design the invitation for the event.
For the invitation, Christian wanted to create a sort of small poster, much like lobby cards used to promote films. For the design itself, Christian wanted to not only evoke the feelings associated with music and dancing, but to also create a look that was reminiscent of a bygone era. With that in mind, Christian set out to create something that married the style of old letterpress posters (like those of Hatch Show Print) with a touch of Blue Note album cover art. The resulting design managed to pay homage to both influences, yet could stand on its own as a unique piece. To top it all off, the client was happy, which always makes Christian happy, too.
