Biography
Christian Thom was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Far from being considered a “design mecca,” Christian still traces the beginnings of his love with design here. Comic books were probably the genesis of this love, with their dynamic compositions, colors, and lettering.
Christian’s fascination with comic books and graphic storytelling opened a new door for him in high school when he became a cartoonist for Omaha North’s newspaper, the North Star. Christian eventually became the Cartoon Editor for the North Star and branched out creating graphics for the paper and eventually designing the yearbook his senior year. During his tenure in the North High Journalism Department he won several awards for his graphic design and cartoons, including an award for Best Yearbook Design in state competition.
Upon graduating with honors from high school in 1995, Christian enrolled at The University of Kansas. During his years spent in college, Christian continued to grow as a designer, not only through the education he received from the school, but from two internships as well. Christian first interned back in Omaha at Omaha Publications, where he worked as a designer on two of their magazines, Omaha Magazine and Welcome. Later, Christian was one of 12 students selected to work on the staff of an in-house design firm for The University of Kansas called the Arts. There he created print pieces for several clients including the University of Kansas School of Business, the University of Kansas School of Engineering, the KU Jazz Festival, and the Kansas Lied Center.
Christian returned to Omaha after graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Kansas. Back at home, Christian landed a job at KMTV creating on-air graphics. Christian quickly rose to his current position there as Station Graphics Producer where he has the added responsibilities of overseeing the station’s other designers, as well as creating print materials for the promotions and sales departments and helping to maintain the station’s branding.
